We used to bring a laptop on long trips but now my daughter uses an ipod Touch. It works great, highly portable, easy for her to hold while she wiggles around, can be brought into restaurants if needed, etc.

I bought a rubberish cover for it to protect against drops and so far it's been sturdy. We make copies of her DVDs using handbrake and then import them into iTunes before the trip, so the iTouch can have different stuff if she wants. A few movies are copy protected, but we can make copies of enough non-protected movies to keep her happy.
